Abstract:
Renewable energy integration and flexible load through demand side response have dramatically increased uncertainty in the electric power systems.
Traditional operation schemes of power systems heavily rely on static and deterministic decision models, and therefore are inevitably fragile to the forecast errors and unable to fully
realize the potential of renewable energy and demand-side responsiveness. We propose a suite of new dynamic decision making models and algorithms for solving multistage
stochastic and robust optimization problems with discrete decisions, continuous nonconvexity such as AC power flow, and temporally and spatially correlated uncertainty in renewable
energy sources and demand response portfolios. We demonstrate that the new decision tools significantly outperform the current practice in the real world large-scale power systems.
This points to a new direction for the modernization of the core operational principles of the modern electric power systems.
